Duct Smoke Detectors

In modern buildings with sprinkelers where smoke detectors aren’t installed in common areas, duct smoke detectors are installed on HVAC units to detect presence of smoke in the air supply and return. These detectors notify the fire alarm control panel of the smoke condition and, in most instances, shut down the HVAC unit it is attached to. By shutting down the HVAC unit, air in sections of the building where smoke is not present can hopefully remain smoke free longer to allow people to exit the building safely.
